The Virginia General Assembly will reconvene on January 11, 2012.

One of the most exciting accomplishments of the 2011 session was the first passage of HJ 693, the Property Rights Amendment. Under the amendment, private property can be taken or damaged only if it is necessary for a public use, when just compensation is paid to the owner. Just compensation must be equal to or exceed the value of the property taken, lost profits, lost access, and damages to the residue caused by the taking.

In Virginia, amendments to the Constitution must be approved by both houses of two separate elected legislatures, so HJ 693 must be voted on again in 2012. We encourage all members, friends, and supporters of the Virginia Property Rights Coalition to please continue to lobby for this important amendment.
